Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientists are studying the bacterium Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 in the Microbial Cell Project. The bacterium may be a potential biological solution to U.S. Department of Energy sites contaminated during the manufacture of nuclear weapons. This image shows Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 growing on the surface of the iron oxide mineral hematite.
