The DTEM – Dynamic Transmission Electron Microscope – enables dynamic in situ gas or liquid observations of complex systems in real-time and under realistic conditions – at nanometer to atomic spatial resolution and microsecond to nanosecond temporal resolution. Scientists use DTEM to advance understanding of protein conformational changes, aging and transformations of aerosols, and mechanisms of battery and catalytic function. This one-of-a-kind, single-shot DTEM instrument will enable significant advances in biology, through studies of protein structures and enzymatic couplings, and environmental studies related to aerosols and soil particle interfaces. Additionally, it will allow observation of dynamic changes and morphologies in materials, such as catalysts and battery electrodes. DTEM is housed in the Quiet Wing of EMSL, a DOE national scientific user facility located at PNNL.
