Chemist Molly O'Hagan adjusts the pressure for her sample at the bench while chemist Wendy Shaw places a high pressure sample into an NMR. Using high pressure NMR, PNNL researchers can watch the catalyst while it is operating, providing critical insight into how it works. PNNL researchers study catalysts that might be used to store electrical energy in chemicals and to pull the energy back out again. Such catalysts can be used for fuel cells to store and use renewable energy.
