Three-dimensional imaging takes the wraps off a zebra cactus growing in a pot, simultaneously revealing the soil, roots and leaves without disturbing the plant. This image was obtained via x-ray computed tomography at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Researchers are working to understand the exchange of nutrients between plants, their roots, soil microorganisms and soil organic molecules in an effort to define critical processes that drive the terrestrial carbon cycle. This new understanding will lead to improved predictive models of how changing climatic conditions will impact plant health and productivity, as well as the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
