The Investigator(r) software program secretly tracks computer use by recording keystrokes and images. The FBI used the software to nab Russian computer hackers who had stolen thousands of credit card numbers. Investigator, made by WinWhatWhere of Kennewick, Wash., was named "Best of Breed" by PC Magazine in 2002. Through its Entrepreneurial Assistance program, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory supported the company with strategic planning assistance as the owners prepared to seek outside investment.
