The Battelle Marine Sciences Laboratory develops instruments, sensor packages, and other equipment specific to field sampling needs. The AXCTD represents an expendable, autonomous environmental sentinel that can be launched from ship or plane to collect oceanographic data in remote areas of the ocean. This multisensor probe collects physical and chemical data in aquatic environments and has the following capabilities: 1) microprocessor-controlled sampling and launch schedules, 2) satellite telemetry, and 3) operation as a surface drifter that transmits sea-surface and air temperatures periodically to satellites with ground-positioning capabilities, such as ARGOS.
