Pacific Northwest National Laboratory staff collect groundwater samples along the Hanford Reach shoreline using small diameter polyethylene tubing that is implanted into the cobbly sediment. Water samples are periodically withdrawn to monitor the characteristics of groundwater that discharges into the river through the riverbed. The tubes are installed and sampled with hand-held equipment carried to the sites by boat to ensure little disturbance to the environment.

Background: Aquifer sampling tubes were developed by the Hanford Site environmental contractor in 1995 for sampling water discharging to the Columbia River from underground aquifers. Additional tubes were installed in 1997 and 2003. Coverage now extends along much of the Hanford Site shoreline, and includes 133 sites with 339 individual tubes, including many of the original tubes. Sampling sites are located every half-mile along the shoreline between 100-B Area and the old Hanford Townsite, and along the 300 Area. The aquifer tube network is currently a task within PNNL?s larger Groundwater Performance Assessment Project. After installation the exposed end of the tube, approx 3 feet, is protected with PVC pipe and covered with rock to hide from view. The tubes are an inexpensive alternative to traditional monitoring wells and cause much less impact in the environmentally and culturally sensitive area of the Columbia River shoreline.
