In 1980, a 220-ton disabled steam generator was shipped from Virginia to Richland at a cost of about $2 a pound. Shipping included a five-week barge trip via the Panama Canal. Battelle engineers used the generator to develop improved methods of nondestructive testing as well as to study cleaning and decontamination techniques for steam generator tubing.
