As alternative fuels become more common, the hydrogen gas sensor shown in the inset could be used to detect hydrogen gas leaks in hydrogen-powered cars and at fuel stations. PNNL worked with a Rusisan organization to help develop the Russian technology and brokered a license agreement between a U.S. firm, Apollo Sensor Technology, and the Russian scientists to comercialize the sensor.

Background: The miniature hydrogen gas sensor has improved reliability and response time. The collaboration represents a commercial venture between Russian technical institutes, a DOE national laboratory (PNNL) and U.S. industry under DOE's Initiatives for Proliferation Prevention program.Through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, Apollo Sensor Technology of Kennewick, Wash., will hold exclusive licensing rights to hydrogen gas sensing technology created by scientists at the Karpov Institute for Physical Chemistry and Institute of Organo-Element Compounds, both in Moscow.
