Shafts of calcite mineral grow rapidly on basalt after exposure to supercritical CO2 for 30 days. Use of dual beam focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy at PNNL's Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory helped capture the formation of the calcite.

Background: Scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory find that basalt rock medium found thousands of feet underground reacts quickly to supercritical CO2 when injected there for carbon sequestration purposes and self-seals undetected cracks and fissures that might allow the CO2 to migrate vertically.
