The EMSL Metallomics system combines ICP-mass spectrometry time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ToFMS) with high-resolution electrospray instrumentation and a specialize two-dimensional high-pressure nano-flow liquid chromatograph. The system separates proteins and protein fragments allowing unambiguous identification and correlation of metals with proteins and other biomolecules. Metals are key components in biological systems and are critical to cellular function. The study of metals is critical for understanding how organisms use energy and how those concepts can be applied to developing clean and more efficient energy sources. EMSL is a Department of Energy national scientific user facility located at PNNL.
