The Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass-Spectometry Proteomics system combines three methods – liquid chromatography, ion mobility separation and time-of-flight mass spectrometry – to detect trace amounts of biomarkers in highly complex biochemical samples within just minutes. The combined instrument platform is also unique in its ability to separate various 3-D forms of disease-specific proteins at high resolutions and with great speed. The platform can separate and detect several different classes of compounds beyond proteins, including lipids and sugars, which could also help identify disease. This EMSL platform is poised to advance research in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health sciences, biofuels, environmental contamination and more. EMSL is a Department of Energy national scientific user facility located at PNNL.
