This image is a composite of complementary microscopic techniques aimed at imaging single nanoparticles. The black area with golden dots is a dark-field optical micrograph which shows a random dispersion of nanoparticles on an atomically flat surface. Optical microscopy is inherently limited in its resolving power, therefore other high-resolution techniques are required to observe subtle details of individual nanoparticles. Scanning electron micrographs of unique nanoparticles originating from the red, blue and yellow points are highlighted in their respective colors.
