Preliminary experiments at National Synchrotron Light Source showed very fast nucleation and growth kinetics when Pd acetate is dissolved in methanol (green) as evidenced by the large Pd-Pd peak (Pd-Pd, coordination number = 8.5, particle size ~2nm). However, no reaction occurred at room temperature in a prototype microfluidic reactor when methanol was mixed with Pd acetate dissolved in toluene (blue, Pd-O coordination number = 4) or acetone (not shown). This was also confirmed in batch experiments.
