Nuclear scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are studying the epsilon metal particle that forms in uranium oxide fuels during reactor operation. The phase appears to have unique catalytic properties possibly because of its small size and microstructure. There is interest in these phases from the standpoint of advanced nuclear recycle and their impact on the long-term durability of spent fuel under geologic disposal.
