Material scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are imaging uranium phases with polarized light microscopy to understand the role of these phases as signatures for components of the nuclear fuel cycle. The phase exhibits beautiful colors although these are short-lived. This project has impact in nuclear forensics.
