Scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are working to improve design of ultra-low background gas proportional counters through detailed simulations of electron avalanches in model counters. A single avalanche is shown in which electrons drift and ionize the surrounding gas with increasing frequency as the electric field magnitude increases near the center wire of the counter.
